Sign reads "Ometepe Kite Center" near lake and trees. White flags with "CORE" logo. Vibrant, breezy atmosphere under blue sky.

If you’re planning to come kitesurf with us on Ometepe Island, here’s a clear and simple explanation of how to get here - from mainland Nicaragua to Playa Santa Cruz, where the kite spot and our school are located.

The journey is easy, and there’s no need to stress.

Step 1: Get to San Jorge Ferry Port

Once you are already in Nicaragua, you’ll need to reach San Jorge, the main ferry port for Ometepe Island.

San Jorge is located on Lake Nicaragua and is about 2–2.5 hours from Managua. You can get there by taxi, shuttle, or public bus.

This is the only port you need - all ferries to Ometepe depart from here.

Step 2: Take the Ferry to Ometepe

From San Jorge, you’ll take a ferry to Ometepe Island.

Crossing time: approximately 50–60 minutes.

Ferries run daily from early morning until late afternoon.

Schedules can occasionally change due to weather, so it’s always good to check locally the day before - check it here

Good to know:

  • There is usually plenty of space on the ferry.

  • You normally do not need to book in advance.

  • Even in high season, it’s rare for travelers to be left behind.

The ferry arrives in Moyogalpa, the main port on Ometepe Island.

Step 3: From Moyogalpa to Playa Santa Cruz, Ometepe

Once you arrive in Moyogalpa, you’ll need to continue to Playa Santa Cruz, where the main kite spot is located.

Travel time is about 40–50 minutes. You can choose between:

  • Taxi

  • Local bus

  • Renting a scooter or motorcycle

Just tell the driver Playa Santa Cruz. It’s a well-known and central area on the island.

Step 4: Arrival at Playa Santa Cruz

Playa Santa Cruz is one of the most central and convenient locations on Ometepe.

The kitesurf spot is right here, and we are happy to welcome everyone :)

From here, you are close to:

  • Ojo de Agua

  • Waterfall hikes

  • Restaurants and cafes

  • Volcano tours

  • Beaches

  • Local accommodations
