Yes - you can kitesurf in Nicaragua. And during the dry season, Ometepe Island stands out as the most consistent freshwater kitesurf destination in the country.

Located in Lake Nicaragua and formed by two volcanoes, Ometepe offers steady wind, warm water, and wide open riding space.

If you’re evaluating where to kitesurf in Nicaragua, Ometepe deserves serious consideration - especially if progression, consistency, and space matter to you more than beach clubs or nightlife.

This guide covers everything you need to know before planning your trip.

The Wind Season

Kitesurfing in Ometepe is seasonal. The wind season runs from December to May, aligning with Nicaragua’s dry season. During these months, the weather is stable, rainfall is minimal, and the wind patterns are consistent.

Unlike tropical destinations, where you wait for random gusts, here the wind shows up with structure.

Most days during the season begin with wind building steadily through the morning and holding into the afternoon. Riders can typically expect 18-25 knots, with stronger days reaching 25-30 knots - especially between January and March.

On most peak-season days, you’ll see riders on 8–11m kites stacking back-to-back sessions from early morning onward.

It’s not chaotic wind.

It’s predictable, progression-friendly wind.

That consistency is what makes Ometepe different.

sweet Warm Water, No Wetsuit, Dry Skies

One of the first things riders notice is how comfortable the conditions feel.

Lake Nicaragua stays warm throughout the season, and a wetsuit isn’t necessary. Most people ride in boardshorts or a bikini, sometimes adding a rash guard for sun protection.

Air temperatures during the dry season typically range between 28–32°C (82–90°F). The steady wind keeps the heat manageable, so it doesn’t feel heavy or overly humid.

Because this is Nicaragua’s dry season, rain is rare. Sessions are rarely interrupted by storms or unpredictable tropical downpours.

It’s warm, windy, and stable - day after day.

What Kite Sizes Work Here?

On average, 8–11m kites are the most common sizes during the season.

With wind typically ranging between 18-25 knots, and stronger days reaching 25-30, most riders use kites between 7m and 12m.

Getting Around the Island

One of the best things about the island is how easy it is to get around. It’s not overcrowded, distances are short, and moving between places feels simple and relaxed.

Most visitors choose to rent a scooter or a motorbike — it’s the most convenient and flexible way to explore, especially if you want to move freely between kite sessions, restaurants, and sunset spots. ATVs are also a popular option for those who prefer something a bit more adventurous.

If you’d rather not worry about logistics, taxis are available and easy to arrange.
